CONNETQUOT GIRLS BATTLE IN THE SUMMER

Posted Wednesday, August 06, 2008 by Ryan Cavanagh

Varsity Girls
The Connetquot Girls Soccer program is again reaching new heights. The Varsity squad finished the summer league regular season with an impressive 9-1 record. That mark was good enough for the team to finish as regular season champions for the first time in summer league history. Last year's team finished in second place before taking home the playoff title. Congratulations to Coach Colie and all the girls on a dynamic regular season.

The playoffs however didn't offer the same success for our girls. After beating a tough Longwood team in the first round 3-1, the girls ran into a highly energized team from Sachem North. Connetquot beat the North girls earlier in the season 1-0 and were ready to continue their remarkable run to another championship. Connetquot went up 1-0 on a gem of a shot by Danielle Murino. The goal seemed to inspire Connetquot as they peppered the All- County goalie from Sachem North. The ball seemed to hit everything but the inside of the net. The inability of the girls to tack on came back to bite them late in the second half as Sachem North stunned the Birds with two late goals and the victory. Sachem North went on to win the summer league title. As for our girls, well lets just say I don't think they are going to let losing become a habit. As for me , I can assure you that this game will certainly be addressed and become a rally cry come August 25th at 7:45 am.

Junior Varsity

In their inaugral season the JV team also performed at a very high level. The younger girls finished in second place . The JV girls completed their season with a record of 8-1-1 .  The girls really developed into a team as the season went on and they began to pound opponents scoring the second most girls in the Junior Varsity League.

As the coach of these young ladies I have to say that the regular season offered so many delighful moments that I would have been happy ending the season right after our final regular season game. And boy would I have missed the ride of a lifetime. My whole life I have avoided roller coasters because truth be told they scare me. Well the girls decided that I needed to get over that fear as we were all about to enter a ride that cost not a cent but was more thrilling than any locomotive riding up a rail at Six Flags.

The first two playoff games offered little to our girls as they beat up on Sachem East and Bellport by a combined 9-0 score. It was a nice clean ride into the final against Smithtown East a team that Connetquot beat in thrilling fashion 5-4 in OT earlier in the season. Our girls started out slow and Smithtown East was enjoying the open field connecting on what seemed like several thousand passes through out the first half. However after the first half whistle the score remained 0-0. After what I felt was a moving halftime speech the girls went out and gave up an early goal to fall behind East 1-0. (So much for my pep talks.) But with in minutes Connetquot surged forward taking advantage of Smithtown's aggressive style of play. Our forwards were easy able to slip by their defenders and put two quick goals behind their keeper. The lead held until two minutes remained in the game. East was making their last stand and Connetquot got called for a trip in the box. A "PK" with two minutes to go in the championship game. I didn't know this roller coaster could ride so low. The PK ripped the net and you guessed it, we were on our way to OVERTIME and the GOLDEN GOAL. Well no golden goal came as the two overtimes ended. The championship game would have to be decided on PK's. The five shooters from each team were ready to test their nerves on maybe the scariest stage around. You try kicking a soccer ball when your leg feels like a bowl of jello. The courageous shooters for Connetquot netted two out of five goals and our outstanding goalie was able to keep three out of five out of our net. So here we are 2-2 after Ot and 2-2 after PKs. Sudden Death shootout would now decide the championship and well lets just say I needed an air bag at this moment. The first shooter for East was unable to beat our keeper. Our keeper/shooter however was able to put the ball in the net. When the ball rippled the net, the girls on the Connetquot bench stormed the field, led by their "reserved coaches" and celebrated their Championship together as a team. The small school large school championship game was cancelled do to poor weather conditions and the girls ended the summer league as I see them "CHAMPIONS!!"

The summer league was a huge success this season and many thanks can go out to all of our parents for taking the time to travel to all of our away sites. Both teams were well equipped with plenty of players for each game. The summer league gave an oppurtunity for 58 Connetquot athletes to compete throughout the summer . I look forward to August 25th and the start to our school ball season. See you all at the fields.

A special thanks goes out to Coach Tony Pelliccio and Nicole Christensen for donating their time and energy to the program.
