T-Birds Soar to Victory

Posted Saturday, September 06, 2008 by Coach Cavanagh
The Varsity girls have been trying to find themselves over the past two weeks. They struggled against Ward Melville and then dominated against NB but were unable to tack on goals when needed. Opening day arrived yesterday and it was anyone's guess which team was going to show up.

The girls started out strong largely because of the play of the backfield. The strong rotation of Nicole Sinacori, Michelle Murino, Alyssa Miller, Laura Fenster, and Amber Kupress moved the ball into space and created mismatches in the center of the field which is where the T-Birds hope to do their most damage. It appeared that East was going to be content with playing a defensive game as they seemed to have 5 defenders in the box at any given time. The game changed when as Danielle Murino possessed the ball slightly outside the 18 when Hills East tries to pull all their defenders up to prevent a through ball. The only problem with that strategy was that Danielle heard the call and spun away from her defender creating a breakaway. Danielle deposited the ball in the lower left corner past a motionless keeper and the T-Birds were on their way.

However as often is the case, the T-Birds were battering the net without getting the results and the half ended 1-0. The girls came out a little flat in the second half and an inspired group of East players took the field. The strong defense held their ground for the first fifteen minutes, but were unable to hold the lead. East was able to free a player through the edge and created a 1v1 with our keeper. Stacey Rao made a valiant attack at the ball, but was unable to stop the opposing forward. So here we were again 1-1 with twenty minutes to play.

The girls again regained their composure and started to create many more chances. The shots began to hit the net and the team's energy was riding high. It wasn't long before stopper Michelle Murino played a perfect chip to her sister Danielle, springing her on another 1 v 1. Danielle put the ball in the net and the girls were again on top.

This time however the girls were able to tack on as Danielle completed her Hat Trick and gave the Birds some much needed breathing room. The Hills East girls continued to play with heart and determination and they were able to put another ball behind our goalie with just over thirty seconds remaining. The final whistle blew and the girls emerged victorious.

Some great steps were taken by the team on the field and then afterwards on the bus ride home. We are still searching for our true identity, but it is nice to collect a win in that process. Look for similar ball movement and opportunities on Monday. Each day we become more of a team.
