Danielle Murino has more than half of her senior season to play with Connetquot and she is already dreading the departure. When the senior forward first started playing with the T-Birds three years ago, she couldn't wait to leave.

The stark contrast shows how far the program has come. Once considered an easy win for opponents, Connetquot has emerged as a legitimate contender for the Suffolk Class AA championship.

Girls on the bench were smiling, jumping up and down and screaming joyously when the final seconds ticked off in host Connetquot's 1-0 win over Northport yesterday in Suffolk League II girls soccer. The postgame scene looked like a postseason celebration. It was just another regular season game, but not to Connetquot (5-0, 1-0).

Northport, which lost in the county final last season, has been one of the prominent teams in the county for a long time and no one present could recall the last time Connetquot beat the Tigers.
